DAVID COULDN’T BELIEVE HOW much he was enjoying Noémi’s company. They’d left the gazebo an hour ago and now they were just walking together, talking. She told him about her life in Bridgefield and he told her about his work on the front lines. She listened to him like she was interested, and seemed impressed. More than he could say for Sheila.

David was due back at the medical centre in twenty minutes, but he sent Marie a text saying he’d report after dinner. “Should you be in a session now?” he asked Noémi.

She gave him a sheepish smile. “Which would you prefer? A boring session about how traumatic childhood experiences affect you in adulthood, or a nice long walk in the woods?”

Stray wisps of hair that had come lose from her ponytail framed her face. David reached out and tucked one behind her ear. She looked away, her cheeks pinking. There was something about a woman blushing at such a small gesture, especially a feisty woman like Noémi, that made David want to do it again.

Instead he steered her towards the way back to the resort. It was time they headed back. “I can tell you about trauma in victims of child abuse if you want? That way you won’t have missed too much from the session.”

“You’ve already lectured me about keyhole surgery and other things that I can’t even pronounce!”

“Just imparting knowledge. And you were the one asking questions.”

Noémi rolled her eyes. “Go on then, I’m listening.”

“Well, in a nutshell, trauma studies show that traumatic experiences get lodged in one part of the brain instead of getting processed properly by the areas of the brain that process normal experiences.”

Noémi groaned. “I feel like I’m back in A-Level Chemistry.”

“This isn’t Chemistry.” David adjusted his guitar. He’d been carrying it for over an hour now and his muscles were paying. “You did A-Level Chemistry?”

“Yeah. It’s an experience I try not to remember in too much detail. Traumatic.”

“What did you get?”

“I managed a B.”

“Can’t have been too traumatic.”

Noémi dug her hands into the back pockets of her jeans. “Back to what you were saying?”

“Right. So, traumatic experiences don’t get processed properly. Instead the child tries to contain it and prevent it from taking over their life. This is where defence mechanisms come in.”

Noémi nodded, her eyes serious all of a sudden.

“To the child, this is the best way of coping, but it’s very damaging because it isolates them and makes them feel abnormal.” David paused. “Do you want me to continue?”

Noémi’s jaw was set, but she nodded. “Yes.”

“Because the child doesn’t feel normal, they expend a lot of effort trying to look normal. This is why parents and guardians often don’t realise that anything has happened.”

Noémi forced a smile. “Are you reading my mind?”

“No, just telling you what the research says.”

“The research sounds scarily accurate.” Noémi removed her hands from her pockets and fingered the ends of her ponytail. “Does the research say anything about how to help the child?”

“Yeah. An adult figure needs to affirm their innocence.
